The National Institute of Optics (CNR-INO) has been working for over ninety years in the vast field of optics, updating its activities in line with the enormous innovations that have characterized this area over the last century. Its main activities include pure and applied research, technology transfer and training. CNR-INO is equipped with its own Technology Transfer network, which promotes interaction between Companies and Researchers, and supports them in the valorization and protection of research results. CNR-INO is also committed to promoting technology transfer processes in the territory on 15 Industry 4.0 topics through its participation in Advanced Training programs on Technology Transfer (AFTTER/ORMA) funded by the Tuscany Region, and in the establishment of CenTraTec (Technology Transfer Center) at the CNR Research Area in Florence.

What role does it have in the PRISMA project

In PRISMA it will be responsible, under the coordination of Dr. Jacopo Catani, Senior Researcher at CNR-INO, for training activities and R&D (research and experimentation) projects on emerging technologies and 5G. From a technological point of view, CNR-INO makes available to the project the expertise developed in the field of Optical Wireless Communications (OWC) and Visible Light Communications (VLC), in collaboration with the LATI laboratory and the VisiCoRe Laboratory, expertise in pervasive sensing based on advanced optical and optoelectronic technologies, and expertise regarding ultra-secure fiber optic communications based on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). CNR-INO's areas of specialization are:

  • Optical technologies for IoT and Smart Factory & Community
  • Study and development of advanced optical, electro-optical and photonic systems;
  • Advanced optical communication systems, classical and quantum;
  • Innovative sensors for processes, products and the environment.
